Home of the Hedgehogs!

Meet our Nursery team for 2025-2026:
Miss Giles, Mrs Payne, Mrs Dodd and Miss Basson

At SMITH, Nursery follow the Statutory Framework for the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS). Our nursery curriculum, therefore, is fluid rather than fixed. We are led by the children’s interests and needs to ensure every child’s individual needs are met, reflecting the vision we have at St. Michael in the Hamlet.
In Early Years, we have what is known as Continuous Provision. Continuous Provision means the children have access to resources that we have out throughout the whole school year. As we move through the school year, we add to these resources and develop them to enhance the children’s learning of a new topic or to follow their interests. This can range from a café to a hospital to a travel agency!
We offer full and part time places in Nursery. Every child is eligible to 15 hours free early education the term after their third birthday. This eligibility remains until they start full time school, by the term of their fifth birthday. This funding is universal and open to all children.
Some three to four year olds are eligible for a total of 30 hours free childcare. This is an additional 15 hours on top of the universal entitlement for three/four year olds. Parents can check their eligibility for this entitlement on https://www.gov.uk/30-hours-free-childcare
Morning sessions are from 8:45am until 11:45am.
Full day sessions are from 8:45am until 2:45pm (extended session until 3:15pm is available for £5 per day payable on Parent Pay)
We also offer paid places for those who would like their child to attend full time but aren’t eligible for the free 30 hours.
Additional extended sessions, into the afternoon, may be available by prior arrangement and subject to availability. £20 per afternoon until 2:45pm or £25 per afternoon until 3:15pm (payable on Parent Pay).
All children staying for lunch must bring a healthy packed lunch from home each day. (Please note we are a nut free school)
All Nursery children are able to access our wrap around provision. Please visit the Breakfast Club and The Haven page for more information.

The children have been enjoying the story ‘Let’s all Creep Through the Crocodile Creek!’ They loved joining in with the actions and exploring the adventure together.
Inspired by the story, the children got creative and made their own crocodiles, using different materials and showing fantastic imagination 🙂

We have loved exploring the Wild Garden and finding leaves and sticks to make our very own autumnal crafts! We also enjoyed a trip to the junior hall to have a look at the books in the book fair. We chose one called ‘The Stinky Wonky Donkey’ to read altogether. It was very funny! 🙂
